Ammonia Recovery

Ammonia recovery from wastewater represents a significant opportunity for sustainable resource management. This process not only reduces the pollutant load in effluents but also allows for the recovery of a valuable compound for reuse.

Contaminated Water

Leachate is contaminated by the interaction of elements dissolved or suspended in the waste, and its treatment remains one of the most challenging tasks to solve.

The WENT landfill in Hong Kong is a major facility. The Organics plant treats the leachate, reducing ammonia levels before its release into the environment. The system uses biogas to provide a heat source for the process.

General Information

  • Reliable and Predictable

  • Can remove large quantities of ammonia.

  • Discharge levels below 100 mg/L

  • pH adjustment and thermal processes available.

  • Custom-designed for any situation

Size options

Ammonia separators supplied by Organics can be used for liquid flows up to 5,000 cubic meters per day. A 10:1 ammonia reduction can be easily achieved. Higher removal levels may require elevated temperatures, high pH levels, or multiple columns. With ammonium ion concentrations above approximately 1,000 mg/L, some form of exhaust air cleaning, such as acid scrubbing or incineration, may need to be considered.

Key Characteristics

  • Low-cost method for treating a specific aspect of leachate or other fluids contaminated with ammonium ions.

  • This ammonia recovery technology is applicable when ammonia is the only parameter excluded from a high-consent requirement.

  • A compact plant that operates using a physical treatment method and is therefore more reliable than biological treatment systems.

  • Options for instrumenting the plant for remote monitoring and control.

Typical Applications

Ammonia recovery has its place among the techniques applied to landfill leachate treatment where ammonia levels must be reduced, but other component concentrations, such as COD and heavy metals, are within discharge permit limits.

The cost of such a system is generally low compared to other options. The power requirement for air circulation is lower than that of an equivalent aerated system, and the required water pressure heads depend on the extraction column height. When operated with in-line pre-filtration, such units can function for many years with minimal maintenance.
